Can a CME occur independently of a flare, and if so would it be weaker? Thanks!

Hi Phobos,

Thanks for the great question! It's a bit out of my expertise, but I'll answer to the best of my knowledge.

To my understanding, a flare can occur without a CME, but a CME cannot occur without a flare. You can think of it a bit like the flare is the match, the coronal plasma that makes up the CME is the bottle rocket, and the CME is the fireworks you see after it takes off. You can spark or light as many matches (flares) as you like, but you won't see anything take off unless the bottle rocket (the coronal plasma) is there is waiting to take off. The flare triggers the eruption, causing the plasma to lift off into space and forming the CME.

Cheers!
